gobi desert tour guide + his camels

Afternoon at the Resonant Sand Gorge, Gobi Desert, Inner Mongolia, China. September 2008.

After paying the admission fee, we were herded to a large area full of benches and given brightly colored sacks with dangling bits of string to pull over our shoes and bind all the way up to our calves. I believe it was so we wouldn’t sully the smooth, clean sand? A number of activities were on offer for the throngs of tourists, like sliding down sand dunes and camel riding.

These camels above are all tied together, with our tour guide riding the first one and leading us tourists behind him like little duckies in a row.
