Fenghuang is a famous and exceptionally well-preserved ancient city in Hunan province, dating back to A.D.686, around the Ming dynasty. It’s currently on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list.
Boats are a common mode of transport. Besides ferrying tourists around, locals ran errands and generally went about their day in their boats.
I didn’t know anything about the city beforehand, but decided to stay for a few days based on my guidebook’s recommendation. I told my mother where I was, and she wrote back that oh, it’s very famous. There was a renowned painter who was from there and/or inspired by the city. He’s known for works of women’s butts. Have fun!
